Calculate what a robot companion will really cost
The purchase price is only the first line. Add required subscriptions, shipping, tax, accessories, maintenance and repair reserves; then subtract only confirmed credits. The result is a transparent ownership estimate you can compare across one to ten years.

Robot companion total cost formula
The calculator uses addition and subtraction that can be audited line by line. It does not assign a resale value, predict repairs, estimate emotional benefit or convert currencies.
What must be paid to begin
Hardware or initiation fee, delivery, tax, import, accessories, setup and optional protection purchased at the start.
What depends on continued service
Required cloud or membership fees begin only after any included service months; optional software and connectivity run for the full period.
What supports the hardware lifecycle
Planned maintenance and a user-selected repair or battery reserve are multiplied by the ownership years.
What is actually guaranteed
Written discounts, grants or reimbursements are capped at gross cost so the calculator never turns an overestimate into fictional profit.
What the current product examples include
Preset amounts were checked July 13, 2026. They are editable starting assumptions, not live checkout quotes. Tax, shipping, optional colors, accessories and uncovered repair remain zero until the user enters them.
| Example | Loaded base | Loaded required service | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| LivingAI EMO | US$279 | US$0 | Shipping, regional tax and optional Home Station are not assumed. |
| Sony aibo | US$3,199.99 | US$25/month after 36 included months | US listing is final sale; US$300/year renewal is represented as a monthly equivalent. |
| LOVOT 3.0 | ¥577,500 | ¥9,900/month | Uses Japanese yen and the minimum published care plan; no currency conversion. |
| ElliQ | US$249 initiation | User must enter current membership | The device is leased, requires an active membership and must be returned after cancellation. |
| PARO | User enters regional quote | US$0 assumed | Hardware, training, maintenance and logistics should come from the authorized distributor quote. |
| Realbotix B-Series | US$20,000 starting price | US$199.99/month | Customization, delivery and larger humanoid configurations can increase cost substantially. |
Robot ownership costs buyers often miss
Regional delivery
Freight, sales tax, VAT, customs, brokerage and insured return shipping can materially change a cross-border purchase.
Required cloud service
Some robots lose learning, conversation, app or even basic operation when a plan ends. Count the service only for months you expect to own the device.
Battery and moving parts
Wheels, joints, soft coverings and batteries wear differently. Use a quote or reserve; do not present a guessed repair as guaranteed.
Setup and accessibility
Professional installation, stronger Wi-Fi, a compatible phone, caregiver time or accessibility modifications may be necessary.
Cancellation and return
A leased robot may need to be returned; a final-sale robot may have no trial. Include packaging and return logistics in the ownership plan.
End of service
There is no automatic resale credit in this calculator because account transfer, cloud support and second-hand value are uncertain.
How to compare robot companion cost scenarios
Create one row for each realistic choice and keep currency, ownership period and cost scope consistent. A three-year aibo estimate in US dollars cannot be compared directly with a five-year LOVOT estimate in yen.
- Use the same horizonThree years is often useful because it exposes recurring service without requiring a long forecast.
- Use the same inclusionsIf one scenario includes tax, accessories and a repair reserve, add equivalent categories to the others.
- Separate required and optionalCalculate a minimum supported experience first, then add optional content or protection as a second scenario.
- Run a stress caseIncrease repair reserve or recurring fees to a level the budget could still absorb; do not predict an exact future increase.
- Do not monetize wellbeingEnjoyment and engagement can be valuable without being turned into guaranteed cash savings.
Five misleading calculator practices this tool avoids
Counting a robot as a replacement for companion care, therapy, security or emergency monitoring when it is not contracted to provide that service.
Assuming Medicare, insurance, FSA/HSA eligibility, a business deduction or a medical tax benefit without case-specific written confirmation.
Using launch prices, rumored products or concept demonstrations as if they were current supported purchases.
Converting currencies with an undisclosed rate while ignoring tax, import, warranty and regional support.
Showing a negative “net cost” as profit when claimed savings exceed the robot’s actual cost.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total cost of owning a robot companion?
Total ownership cost includes the base device, regional purchase costs, accessories, required and optional services, connectivity, maintenance and a realistic repair reserve. Depending on the product, recurring service may be zero or a substantial share of the total.
Why does the calculator not estimate resale value?
Second-hand value depends on hardware condition, batteries, account transfer, region, cloud support and manufacturer policy. Treating an uncertain resale amount as guaranteed would understate ownership cost. Users can enter a confirmed buyback as a one-time credit.
Can I calculate in Mexican pesos or euros?
Yes. Choose a currency and enter every field in that same currency. The tool changes formatting but does not convert amounts. For a foreign preset, obtain a current delivered quote before replacing its native-currency values.
Are subscriptions counted during included service months?
No. Required subscription cost begins after the number of included months entered in the form. Optional software and connectivity are counted for the full ownership period because they are separate user assumptions.
Can a companion robot pay for itself?
That should not be assumed. A robot may provide enjoyment, engagement or operational value, but this calculator does not treat care, therapy, health, security or productivity claims as guaranteed financial returns.
Does the calculator save financial information?
No. Calculations and comparison rows exist only in the current page. They are not submitted, stored in an account or retained after the page reloads.
