Miko 3: the conversational choice that needs active oversight
Ages 5–10
Miko positions Miko 3 as an AI-powered learning robot for ages 5–10. The current US product page lists it at $299 and describes a wide-angle camera, dual microphones, touch and distance sensors, a parental dashboard and an optional Miko Max plan starting at $8.25 per month. That makes it the closest match here to what most parents picture when they hear “robot companion.”
Why it may fit
- Designed for a defined child age range rather than a generic gadget audience.
- Conversation, stories, games and learning activities are packaged in one device.
- The parent app provides settings and activity controls.
- The manufacturer says parents can disable the camera and microphone.
What to review first
- It is a connected device that can process voice, face and profile information.
- Some premium experiences require a recurring Miko Max subscription.
- Natural-sounding conversation can encourage a child to over-trust a machine.
- Consent, retention and deletion settings deserve review before the child starts.
The important nuance is that “privacy controls” does not mean “no data.” Miko’s privacy policy, updated March 30, 2026, describes child profiles, voice commands, facial or voice information, preferences, parental consent, retention and deletion. Read the current policy for your country, create the account yourself and begin with the most restrictive permissions that still support the features you intend to use.
Our verdict: Miko 3 is the strongest fit of these three for a family specifically seeking conversational interaction. Buy it only if an adult will manage the account, explain what AI is, review settings and keep its role bounded. It is not a set-and-forget electronic friend.
Option 2
Eilik: expressive play without required Wi-Fi
Age fit: verify
Eilik is a small desktop character with touch responses, animations and interactions with other Eilik units. Energize Lab’s official store lists a $149.99 price and a $139.99 sale price at the time of checking, and states that its core behavior works without Wi-Fi or an internet connection. For privacy-conscious households, avoiding always-connected voice conversation can be a meaningful advantage.
But Eilik should not be confused with a curriculum, tutor or open-ended AI chatbot. Its appeal is personality, tactile reactions and short-form desk play. The optional AI Station is a separate expansion and changes the capability and connectivity discussion; assess that component separately rather than assuming the base robot’s privacy profile applies to every add-on.
Why it may fit
- Core character interactions do not require an internet connection.
- No mandatory monthly plan is listed for the base experience.
- Simple physical interaction is easier for a parent to observe than private AI chat.
- Multiple units can interact for collaborative or imaginative play.
What to review first
- The current product page does not clearly publish a child age recommendation.
- It contains a rechargeable battery, moving parts and small physical components.
- Its entertainment value may fade if the child expects deep conversation or coding.
- Software updates or optional accessories can introduce additional data practices.
Our verdict: Eilik is the more privacy-light character option when your priority is personality without required cloud conversation. Before giving it to a child, check the packaging and manual for age grading, small-parts warnings and charging instructions. For very young children, “cute” never replaces supervision.

Sphero BOLT+: choose creation over simulated friendship
Grades 3–10
Sphero BOLT+ is a programmable rolling robot aimed at grades 3–10. Children can control it through drawing, block coding, JavaScript or Python using Sphero’s app or web interface. Sphero identifies $199 as its regular price. It does not try to become a confidant; the relationship is built around making, testing and debugging.
That distinction is valuable. A child can still name the robot and enjoy its personality, but the core loop rewards agency: “What can I program this machine to do?” rather than “What does this machine think about me?” It can serve siblings of different skill levels because activities can progress from simple paths to sensors and text-based code.
Why it may fit
- A clear educational audience: grades 3–10.
- Several coding modes support progression instead of one fixed difficulty.
- Play naturally invites challenges, measurement and collaboration.
- No conversational persona is required to hold the child’s attention.
What to review first
- A compatible phone, tablet or computer is part of the experience.
- Account, app and school-platform privacy still matter.
- Fast movement requires a safe floor area away from stairs and pets.
- A child seeking a cuddly or conversational character may find it too task-focused.
Our verdict: BOLT+ is our preferred route when the buying goal is learning and long-term creative value. It is not a direct substitute for Miko 3 or Eilik, and that is exactly why it belongs in this guide: sometimes the safer, more durable “companion” is a tool the child controls.
Developmental fit
Match features to age, not just reading level
Children do not interpret an expressive machine the way adults do. Voice, eye contact and personalized responses can make software feel alive and authoritative. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes both opportunities and risks from generative AI, including misinformation, privacy threats and a false perception of AI as a friend or caregiver. Use age bands as a starting framework, then account for the individual child’s maturity.
Simple and shared
Prefer short, adult-led sessions, offline or tightly bounded behavior and no open-ended AI chat. Check small parts and age labels. At this age, the parent should remain part of the play.
Visible controls
Choose parent-managed content, clear stop controls and physical co-play. Explain in plain language that the robot is programmed and cannot understand feelings like a person.
Create and question
Prioritize coding, storytelling and projects. Teach children to verify AI answers, avoid sharing secrets and ask a trusted adult when a response feels strange or upsetting.
Autonomy with boundaries
Discuss privacy and persuasive design directly. Keep the distinction between supportive conversation and emotional dependency, and agree on what information remains off-limits.

The 10-question privacy check every parent should run
A connected toy may collect more than a screen name. Cameras, microphones, voice recognition, facial features, precise identifiers, usage history and child profiles can all be relevant. The US Federal Trade Commission recommends asking how a connected toy collects, stores and shares information, and what control parents receive.

Identify cameras, microphones, location, touch and motion sensors. Look for a physical shutter, mute control or unmistakable indicator.

Separate what works locally from what stops working offline. “Bluetooth only” can still pass data through a connected phone app.

Conversation safety
Teach the child what the robot cannot be
Companion-like AI can create more risk than a conventional learning app because it invites trust and attachment. UNICEF’s 2026 paper on AI as a “friend” calls for preventive safeguards, while its broader guidance warns about attachment, manipulation and displacement of human interaction. For younger children, keep open-ended chat disabled when the product permits it.
A parent script that is simple enough to remember
“This robot is a machine that predicts answers. It can sound friendly, but it is not a person and it can be wrong. Do not tell it secrets. If it says something scary, confusing or about safety, stop and tell me.”
Watch for withdrawal from family or friends, distress when access ends, secretive use, unusually long sessions or statements that the robot “understands me better than people.” None proves harm by itself, but each is a reason to pause, talk and reset boundaries. If the child is in distress, use qualified human support—not a consumer robot.

Follow the manufacturer’s age grading. Inspect detachable pieces, damaged shells and exposed fasteners, especially around children under three.
Charging
Use the specified charger and cable on a stable, ventilated surface. Stop using a battery that swells, overheats, leaks or smells unusual.
Movement
Keep rolling robots away from stairs, water, sleeping pets and busy walkways. Tie back hair and loose cords near wheels or joints.
Sound and light
Set a comfortable volume, avoid prolonged close-range sound and provide breaks from bright or repetitive effects if the child is sensitive.
Used products
Confirm the exact model, charger and account-reset process. Search the product and model in the official recall database before purchase.
Damage and repair
Do not hand a cracked, wet or malfunctioning robot back to a child. Follow official service guidance instead of improvised battery repair.

Choose Miko 3 if you specifically want guided conversation and will actively manage its connected features. Choose Eilik if you want a charming desktop character whose core play does not require internet access, after confirming age and physical-safety guidance. Choose Sphero BOLT+ if your priority is coding, experimentation and a product the child commands rather than confides in.
Whichever route you take, the durable value comes from what the child creates, practices or shares with people. The robot should open conversations with your family—not replace them.
