No monthly fee is not the same as no cloud

A Sony aibo costs $3,199.99 and includes three years of its AI Cloud Plan; after that, Sony’s current renewal is $300 a year. ElliQ is leased for $39 to $59 a month. At the other end, a Joy for All companion cat runs on four C batteries and has no app at all. Between those extremes sits a group of robots that charge nothing after checkout but still use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or an app for some features.

Short answer: Eilik, Eiliko, Joy for All Companion Pets, Casio Moflin and EMO have no mandatory subscription in their current official listings. Only Joy for All and Eilik’s core mode work with no connection at all.

Three ways robot companions are sold

One-time purchase, offline

You pay once and the robot works without an account. Joy for All Companion Pets and Eilik’s core behaviors fit here. Nothing breaks if a company changes its servers.

One-time purchase, connected

No monthly fee, but an app, Wi-Fi or company servers handle setup, updates or AI features. Moflin, EMO and Eiliko fit here.

Hardware plus plan

The robot needs a paid plan for its full feature set: aibo after the included three years, Miko 3 with Miko Max, LOVOT’s care plan.

Lease or membership

You never own the device. ElliQ is the clearest example: an initiation fee plus a monthly membership, and the robot goes back if you cancel.

Prices from the official US stores of Energize Lab, Ageless Innovation, LivingAI and Casio on October 12, 2026. Tax, shipping and duties are extra.

Eilik and Eiliko

Energize Lab states that Eilik “can work without WiFi or Internet.” Its 450 mAh battery gives about 1.5 hours per charge over USB-C, and the optional AI Station ($99) adds natural conversation. Eiliko is a smaller clip-on model at $59.90 that uses the app over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for AI chat, and Energize Lab promises “no subscriptions.” Read our affordable robot companions guide for how they compare with other budget picks.

Joy for All Companion Pets

The cat and pup run on four 1.5V C alkaline batteries, respond to touch and voice with purring or barking, and have no app, account or camera. That makes them the most predictable choice on this list, and the easiest for an older relative to use. See our full guide to robot companions for seniors.

Casio Moflin

Moflin is a palm-sized furry robot that moves and makes sounds in response to touch and voice. Casio says voice features are converted into non-identifiable data stored on the robot, and data reaches Casio’s server only if you choose to upload it through the free MofLife app. Battery life is about 5 hours per charge on its wireless bed.

EMO

LivingAI sells EMO for $279, or $369 with the Home Station that lets it return to charge on its own. No plan is required, but online features and updates depend on LivingAI’s services. Our EMO review covers what works and what does not.

What still needs a connection

“No subscription” protects your budget. It does not protect the features that live on a company’s servers. If a brand stops supporting an app or closes a service, connected features can disappear even though you paid nothing monthly.

Robot Works fully offline? What depends on the company
Joy for All Pets Yes Nothing after purchase
Eilik Yes, core behaviors Optional AI Station conversation and computer-based updates
Moflin Yes, day-to-day behavior The optional app, journal and software updates
Eiliko Partly AI conversation through the app and Wi-Fi
EMO Partly Online abilities, app features and firmware updates

Three-year cost: one-time purchase versus a plan

Robot Upfront Required plan Approximate 3-year total
Joy for All Cat $159.99 None About $160 plus batteries
Moflin $429 None $429
Miko 3 with Max $299 $99/year About $596
ElliQ (lowest rate) $249 initiation $39/month About $1,653, and you do not own it
Sony aibo $3,199.99 3 cloud years included $3,199.99, then $300/year

Five questions to ask before buying a “no subscription” robot

  1. 1
Is any feature on the box marked “requires app” or “requires Wi-Fi”?

Those features depend on the company’s servers even if they are free.

  2. 2
Is there a paid add-on that the marketing relies on?

Eilik’s AI conversation needs the $99 AI Station; Miko’s library needs Max.

  3. 3
What does the robot do with no connection at all?

Try it with Wi-Fi off during the return window.

  4. 4
    How is the battery replaced?

C batteries are easy to swap; built-in lithium cells need the manufacturer or a repair service.

  5. 5
What is the warranty and return period?

Eilik and Eiliko list 90 days; Moflin and Miko list one year.

Frequently asked questions

Which robot companion works completely without internet?

Joy for All Companion Pets have no connectivity at all, and Eilik’s core features work without Wi-Fi. Moflin also behaves normally without its optional app.

Does Sony aibo require a subscription?

The US bundle includes three years of the AI Cloud Plan. Sony’s renewal is currently $300 per year; without it, many cloud features stop.

Is Miko 3 usable without Miko Max?

Yes, but with limited access to apps, content, progress reports and some parental controls.

Do free apps collect data?

They can. Casio says MofLife uploads data only when you choose to and collects non-identifying usage information. Read each privacy notice before setup.
